Starter$5 per month ($50 per year)120 minutes per monthBilled per second
Pro$15 per month ($150 per year)15 hours per monthPriority queue, AI summaries, meeting minutes, chapters, API access
Studio$39 per month ($390 per year)60 hours per month, fair useHighest priority

Each file can hold up to 3 hours of audio and up to 100 MB after the audio is extracted in your browser. Plans can change; the pricing page has the current details.

Starter divided out: $5 for 120 minutes is $0.0417 per minute at full use, or $2.50 per hour.

Pro divided out: 15 hours is 900 minutes, and $15 divided by 900 is $0.0167 per minute at full use, or $1.00 per hour. That is 60 percent less per hour than Starter.

Studio divided out: 60 hours is 3,600 minutes, and $39 divided by 3,600 is $0.0108 per minute at full use, or $0.65 per hour. That is 74 percent less per hour than Starter.

How to estimate your cost

  1. Add up the minutes you record per month.
  2. Subtract the minutes you can skip (silence, off-topic parts).
  3. Choose the plan whose allowance covers the total with a margin.
  4. Add the cost of your review time.

Example: four 25-minute meetings a month is 100 minutes, which fits in Starter's 120 minutes. At full use that month costs $5, or 5 cents per minute ($5 divided by 100). Ten hours of audio a month is 600 minutes, which is beyond Starter and fits in Pro's 900 minutes: $15 divided by 600 is 2.5 cents per minute.

Automatic or human?

Automatic transcription is a fast first draft for clear audio. A human service is for texts that must be right, such as legal records or published quotes. Many people use automatic transcription and review it themselves, which costs less than a human service.

Free options and their trade-offs

Free tiers often limit minutes, file length or the export of SRT. TooLongToListen gives 10 minutes at sign-up so you can test with a real clip. That is smaller than some free allowances, so our case rests on how the output reads and on privacy: the video stays on your device and the audio is processed on our own server.

Hidden costs

  • Review time, which is real money if your time is paid.
  • A second tool for subtitles if the first does not export SRT.
  • Fixing encoding problems; see SRT encoding explained.
  • Splitting recordings that exceed a tool's per-file limit (here, anything over 3 hours).

Test with one file

Use the free minutes on a real recording: video to text. For what leaves your device, read privacy-first transcription.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to transcribe an hour of audio?

It depends on the model. Automatic tools charge by subscription or per minute, and human services charge more per minute. With TooLongToListen, Starter is $5 per month and includes 120 minutes, which is 2 hours, so an hour of audio uses half the month at roughly 4 cents per minute. Pro is $15 per month for 15 hours, which brings the hour down to $1.

What are the TooLongToListen plans?

Free gives 10 minutes at sign-up. Starter is $5 per month ($50 per year) with 120 minutes per month. Pro is $15 per month ($150 per year) with 15 hours per month. Studio is $39 per month ($390 per year) with 60 hours per month under fair use. Check the pricing page for the current plan details.

Are free transcription tools really free?

Free tiers usually have limits on minutes, file length or export formats. Read the limits and the privacy terms before you rely on one.

Is automatic transcription accurate enough?

For clear audio it is a good first draft. For legal, medical or published quotes, review against the audio or use a human service.

Are minutes rounded?

Starter is billed per second, so very short files are not rounded up to a full minute. Check the pricing page for the rule on other plans.
