Transcribe WhatsApp Voice Messages to Text (3 Ways)

By TooLongToListen · Published October 21, 2026 · Updated

Way 1: WhatsApp's built-in transcript

Press coverage and third party guides describe a transcript feature that WhatsApp rolled out from late 2024, generated on the device and visible only to you. Steps reported:

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
  2. Tap Chats.
  3. Tap Voice message transcripts and switch it on.
  4. Choose the language and, if asked, download the language pack.
  5. In a chat, press and hold a voice message and choose Transcribe.

Things to know:

  • The list of supported languages depends on your operating system and app version, and guides disagree on the exact list. Check the WhatsApp Help Center for your device.
  • If the voice note is in a different language from the selected one, the app can report that transcription is unavailable.
  • The feature is designed for messages inside the app. It does not help when you want the text in a file, in a folder, or on a computer.

Way 2: save the audio and use a browser tool

This route fits long notes, desktop work, archiving text and chats where you cannot turn the feature on.

Step 1: get the audio out of WhatsApp

  • Android: press and hold the voice message, tap Share or Forward and save it to email or cloud storage. The file is usually .opus.
  • iPhone: press and hold the message, choose Forward or Share, then Save to Files or send it to your email.
  • WhatsApp Web or Desktop: open the message menu and look for a download option, which exact wording varies by version.
  • Exporting a whole chat: More > Export chat > Attach media produces a package with the audio files. This shares the entire conversation, so use it only when you need many notes at once.

Menu names differ by system and version. The goal is to end up with an audio file.

Step 2: transcribe with TooLongToListen

  1. Open TooLongToListen.
  2. Drag the audio file to the upload area. The app accepts .opus, .m4a, .mp3, .ogg, .wav and other audio and video formats.
  3. Sign in with Google. The free plan includes 10 minutes at sign-up.
  4. Start the transcription. The text appears on screen.
  5. Copy it to email, a document or a chat. To get timed text, tick the subtitles option before you start and download the SRT.

Maximum privacyReported to run on the deviceAudio is sent to a server; read the policy

For most short notes the built-in transcript is enough. A separate tool is for the cases where its limits get in the way.

Way 3: bots and third-party apps

Bots receive the audio in a chat and send back text, and some phone apps do the same. Before using one:

  • Find out who runs the service and read its privacy policy. A WhatsApp voice note contains other people's voices.
  • Prefer services that say what happens to the audio after transcription.
  • Avoid sending notes with banking, health or third-party data unless you need to.

How to get better results

  • Ask senders for notes of 2 or 3 minutes. They are easier to transcribe and answer.
  • In noisy places, move the phone closer to your mouth when recording.
  • Reread the text. Phone numbers, amounts, dates, names and addresses are where errors concentrate; listen again when in doubt.
  • Keep the audio. A transcript does not replace the original as a record.

Common errors

Message or symptomWhat to do
"Transcript unavailable" in WhatsAppCheck that the selected language matches the audio, or use an external tool
The .opus file will not play on your computerDrop it directly into the transcription tool, which accepts the format
"The audio is longer than 3 hours"Cut the file into parts and transcribe each
"This file has no audio"The file is image only or empty; choose another

Use it responsibly

Transcribing what you received is common, but the content belongs to the conversation. Do not forward someone's words without permission, and agree on where your team stores transcripts.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp transcribe voice messages by itself?

Yes, press coverage and third party guides report a built-in transcript feature released in late 2024. You turn it on in Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts and choose a language. Availability and languages vary by device and version.

How do I transcribe a WhatsApp voice message on a computer?

Save the voice note as a file, open a browser transcription tool and drag the file in. TooLongToListen accepts .opus and other audio formats up to 3 hours per file.

Can I transcribe long voice notes?

TooLongToListen handles up to 3 hours of audio per file. Only a recording longer than 3 hours must be cut into parts and transcribed separately.

Does the audio leave my phone?

Reports say the built-in feature works on the device. With a browser tool the audio is sent to a server, so read the privacy policy. With TooLongToListen the audio is processed on our own server.

Why does WhatsApp say transcription is unavailable?

The most common reason is that the voice note language differs from the language selected for transcripts, or that the language is not supported on your device. An external tool that detects the language automatically can help.
