Transcribe a Recorded Lecture to Study Faster

Before you record

StepWhy
Ask the instructor and check the school policyRecording rules differ
Sit near the speakerDistance adds echo and noise
Use a phone voice recorder in airplane modeNo calls interrupt the file
Name the file with date and subjectEasy to find later

Workflow

  1. Export the recording from your phone as an audio file. Video files also work; the app extracts the audio in your browser, and the video stays on your device.
  2. Open TooLongToListen and drop the file in.
  3. Sign in with Google and start. 10 minutes are free at sign-up.
  4. Copy the text into your notes app.
  5. Optional: tick the subtitles option to get timestamps and jump back to the audio.

Turn the transcript into notes

  1. Skim the transcript to find the structure of the class.
  2. Add headings for each topic.
  3. Highlight definitions, formulas, dates and examples.
  4. Write short notes in your own words. Copying text does not teach you anything.
  5. Add questions to ask in office hours.
  6. Check formulas and terms against the slides.

Study techniques that fit transcripts

TechniqueHow the transcript helps
Active recallCover the text and explain each section
FlashcardsTurn definitions into question and answer cards
Search before examsFind where a term was explained
Group studyShare notes where the lecturer allows it

Limits to keep in mind

  • Up to 3 hours of audio per file.
  • No speaker separation: questions from the room and answers merge.
  • Recognition degrades with echo, distance and technical vocabulary.
  • The speech model detects language automatically; Portuguese is our main focus and other languages should be reviewed.
  • A transcript does not replace attending class.

Privacy

Class recordings include other people's voices. Keep them private, do not post them, and delete what you no longer need. The video stays on your device; the audio is processed on our own server. See privacy-first transcription.

Try one class

Upload a recording at video to text and see how the transcript reads.

Frequently asked questions

Can I record my professor?

Only if the school and the lecturer allow it. Many institutions have recording policies and some jurisdictions require consent. Ask first and use the recording for study only.

How do I make study notes from a lecture transcript?

Read the transcript, highlight definitions, examples and questions, then rewrite them in your own words under headings. A summary helps as a starting point but check it against the slides.

What if the lecture is longer than 3 hours?

Each file can hold up to 3 hours of audio, so most lectures fit in one file. Only a recording over 3 hours, such as a 4 hour workshop, must be cut at a natural break and transcribed in parts.

Can it summarize the lecture?

A text summary is included in the Pro and Studio plans. Summaries can miss detail, so use them to navigate and check the transcript for anything you will be tested on.

Will formulas and technical terms be right?

Spoken formulas and specialized vocabulary are common sources of errors. Check them against your slides and textbook.
